Keeping Spirits Up

A reason to be cheerful…

It may feel like Groundhog Day for many of us in isolation, but friends, it’s World Cocktail Day. And that has to be cause for celebration (pause to raise a glass).

This year, it’s also 100 years since the start of Prohibition – an era that can claim to be the true ancestor of the modern craft spirit.
We can draw a direct line from the emergence of the underground speakeasies to our modern bar scene and thriving cocktail industry, as it was the harshness of bathtub gin and backstreet moonshine that lead to the creation of a huge range of delicious and iconic cocktails that were designed to make these rough spirits more palatable. Classic Prohibition era cocktails like the French 75, The Sidecar and the Old Fashioned are now mainstays of most bar menus.

In the current difficult economic climate, we’re going to take inspiration from a man who found ways to be creative and entrepreneurial against the odds…

We’re going to take a moment today to toast our own Prohibition era legend. Our namesake, William McCoy, an enterprising New Yorker known as one of the few honourable gentlemen smugglers. He is credited with creating the infamous “Rum Row” a route to ‘floating liquor stores’ providing an ingenious way for Americans to buy high quality alcohol from over the border.

Bill is famous for his fair dealings, lack of corruption and for the fact that he never diluted or adulterated his product, meaning his products were of the highest quality. An ethos we live by ourselves.

PURE is and always will be… “The Real McCoy”.

In the current difficult economic climate, we’re going to take inspiration from a man who found ways to be creative and entrepreneurial against the odds.

And for all of us finding it tough at the moment, what better excuse to dust off the cocktail shaker you were bought last Christmas, follow Bill’s example and choose a high-quality spirit to enjoy World Cocktail Day at home. May we suggest a bottle of PURE vodka might come in handy.

To get you started we have a range of vodka-based recipes in our Cocktail Hub.

PURE Inspiration.
