Moscow Mule

The story goes that the tale of the Moscow Mule, predictably, begins in Russia.

In the 1940’s, at a copper factory ran by an American family, with one of their products being the copper mug. The mugs weren’t selling and so the daughter of the business, Sophie, headed back to America, with thousands of mugs in tow, in search of a buyer.

On her journey between bars and restaurants trying, and failing, to sell these mugs, Sophie ended up in a British pub in Los Angeles, the Cock and Bull, where she met the owner Jack Morgan who was trying, and failing, to sell his own brand of ginger beer. Luckily for Sophie, Jack was very good friends with the new American owner of Smirnoff vodka, who was trying, and failing, to convince the American public to drink vodka.

The three decided to join forces, and create a cocktail that contained vodka and ginger beer and was served in a copper mug. They added lime for flavour and the Moscow mule was born. The perfect vehicle to deliver their goods – a delicious, incredibly simple cocktail that boomed in the 50’s and to this day is still one of the most popular cocktails in the world.
